Cect 599+ on sale

As it seems the new version of Cect 599, named Cect 599+ (the same name convention as with P168 :) ) is out and it is already listed on Solomobi:

It has 2 sim cards (one standby), display resolution has increased to 240x400px, Bluetooth 2.0, comes with 256MB TF card. The old 599 had 3 buttons on the bottom. 599+ has one large Iphone like button. It also has "Slide to unlock" function as you can see from the photos. The camera is supposed to be 2.0 Mp but again having previous experience with chinese phones it is probably 0.3 Mp.

Update: I found the same phone on this website under the name LH01:

iFone S688 aka Digitalrise D800 Video review

Hiphone I32 Video with presumably the new firmware 1.2

Here is a video of the Hiphone I32 with probably the new firmware v1.2. Look at the MP3 player – it has the pause and stop button now, the volume control is on the top of the window and the progress bar is on the bottom. Seems like you can drag the progress bar but not sure.

Hiphone video from the camera

As already mentioned the camera of the Hiphone is not the best one. I would say that it is not even close to good :) Maximum video size is 320 x 240 px and maximum frame rate is 10 fps. Video codec used is MJPEG so the quality in dynamic scenes degrades noticeably.

Hiphone photos from the camera

As with the other chinese phones the camera is not the strongest selling point. In fact most of these phones are advertised as 2 or 3 megapixels but in reality they are 0.3 megapixels (640x480 px). Here are a couple of photos taken with the Hiphone built-in camera. Click them for the original version.

CECT manuals

A list of english PDF manuals for many CECT mobiles:

iFone (aka Cect) A88 Video

A88 is another Iphone clone. This is probably I can call an upgraded version of P168+. It has the same features even the same Engineering mode as that on the P168+.

Here is a link to the video:

iFone (aka Cect) S688 Videos

Here are two videos of this new Iphone clone. It seems there is no shake control nor autorotation functionality when viewing images or movies. It also lacks the multitouch. The navigation as a whole seems more like the chinese OS used in thier dual sim phones not like that on the real Iphone. The menu buttons are usually very small so you have to use the included stylus. A feature that is missing in the Hiphone is when you are turning off the phone you get "Slide to unlock" in order to shut it down - the same as on the Iphone.

Hiphone "water" effect

I don't know whether this is a bug or just this is the way the touch screen technology works but it is interesting.

Hiphone I32 Video

In this one you can clearly see that when making a call the loudspeaker icon is not active. I can only hope that the manufacturer will soon fix it.

P168+ secret codes

*#3646633# - Engineer mode. Apart from the various settings you can set your P168+ to work on 850MHz band (by default it works only on 800/900/1800MHz). Go to Network settings -> Band selection -> Now if you see more than 3 diffrent bands with the 850 you have the quad band (850 support) and you can set it to use it.

To make the Speakers/Volume even louder do the following: Under engineer mode go to Audio. Now go to normal mode. Once you have reached this stage go to melody now set Volume 6 as high as you like but I would not suggest going any higher than 160. (Tip: ONCE YOU HAVE DONE THIS AND WANT TO USE THE MP3 PLAYER SET THE SOUND SETTINGS TO TREBLE MAKES IT LOUDER AND CLEARER).

If you want more information about your Cect p168 including the time and date of manufacture, make and model, serial numbers and many other codes that you could want, then you need to enter the factory mode. On the keypad enter *#66*# for Factory mode.

Hiphone I32 video

This is a video of the Hiphone labeled "Hiphone V2". It is not version 2 of the Hiphone, don't get excited :) However it is a firmware version 1.1 or 1.2. See the red icon in the top left corner when writing SMS messages. It is strange also that there are many error dialogs during the presentation.

Hiphone video clip settings – part 2

I noticed that the video codec of the video clips taken with Hiphone is MJPEG at 320x240 px resolution and the playback was smooth. So I decided to try to make a clip and play it. And guess what - it worked. Hiphone can play smoothly MJPEG 320x240 px movies at 15 or 30 fps. The downside of this video codec is that the quality in dynamic scenes degrades quite a bit and the size of the movies is enormous - almost 10 megabytes per minute (at 1500 kbit/s bit rate).

So if you want to make a MJPEG movie, go to to Settings in Total Video Converter, choose MJPEG video codec, set 30 fps. For the bit rate I suggest to put something higher than 600 kbits/s. Remember - the higher bit rate, the higher movie size.

Hiphone optimal video clip settings

The Hiphone has a video player but it cannot play various video formats. In fact it can only play 3GP format movies. Since the CPU is not very fast and as it seems there is no separate hardware decoding, so the Hiphone cannot play higher resolution movies. For example if you try to play a 320x240 movie at 30fps the player lags and drops frames and the auto rotate function does not work (black screen with sound only).

As already said the player supports 3GP format. Supported video codecs are MPEG-4 and H263. Supported audio codec is AMR-NB.

The Hiphone comes with Total Video Converter software in order to convert existing movies and make them Hiphone compatible :) I made a few tests with different quality movies and I found the following recommended settings – resolution (QCIF): 176x144 px, frame rate: 14.985.

Below are the settings applied in Total Video Converter. Click on each image to view larger version.

Changes in Hiphone firmware 1.1

Last Updated: 2008-04-13

Ok, as I promosed here are some positive changes from the previous firmware version and some things that are not fixed yet:

  • different startup wallpaper (a dragon picture)
  • smoother menu navigation
  • the music player can play mp3 vbr and mp3 with bitrate higher than 128 kbps
  • loudspeaker feature during a call still not active
  • no subdirectories support
  • filenames length is 21 characters maximum and space is allowed
  • Wallpaper on "Slide to unlock" screen can be changed (Settings -> Display settings -> Wallpaper settings)
  • When composing SMS message the red icon showing whether you input digits or letters has been moved to the top left corner
  • You can send SMS to persons that are not in your Phone book
  • Under Multimedia, "Leav" menu item is replaced by "Call Recorder"
  • Increased LCD backlit brightness
  • Sound coming out from the speakers even when the handsfree is connected - FIXED
  • German language added. Now available languages are: English, French, Chinese, Russian, Vietnamese, Portugese, Spanish and German
  • Filenaming of photos and videos taken with the camera is random not continuous. Naming of photos is PIC_xxxx.jpg and of videos is MJPEG_xxxx.3gp where xxxx is a random number
  • No sorting option available in file explorer. New files are added in the beginning of the list
  • Still no handwriting recognition available
  • Telephone numbers in phonebook should start with +(country-code)(tel. number), eg. +86755351729. Otherwise the person's name won't be recognized and only telephone number will be displayed
  • The image viewer is quite bad. The Hiphone display is 240x320 px. If you try to view a photo with different proportions you will see a jagged image. For example if you try to view a 640x480 photo it is jagged but if you try to view a 480x640 photo then it's ok. It seems the Hiphone image viewer automatically resamples wider photos and the resample algorithm is awfull (probably just simple Nearest Neighbor)

There are more changes and I'll keep you updated as I have time to hunt them down :)

Hiphone system codes

I've been trying some codes I found for chinese dual sim phones and hoping they were going for some reason to work with Iphone. When a code fails it shows the following text - "Unexpected data". For my surprise three of the codes worked but I cannot understand their purpose.

Here they are:

  • ##62# - Shows "Success"
  • *#21**11# - Shows "Check status: Deactivated"
  • *#43# - Shows "Check status: Actived"

If anyone has an idea what these codes are doing, please contact me.

The new Hiphone firmware 1.1

Today I got a new copy of the Hiphone with the new firmware version 1.1 (anyone know how I can check this?). There are some changes in the menu and in the software as a whole. The first thing I tested of course is whether the loudspeaker feature during a call has been fixed. Unfortuantely I can confirm that it is not fixed.

During the next days I will cover the differences in more detail. Stay in touch :)
